[Type the document title] A covenant is a promise or an agreement with binding obligations. (Arnold) In relations to the Bible it signifies God’s pledge to bless mankind. The characteristics of a covenant are such that they are irreversible and permanently binding. The Bible contains many covenants, most of which are contained in the Old Testament. One of which is prophesized in the Old Testament, and for Christians the promise is fulfilled in the New Testament. The major covenants in the Bible are the Noahic, the Abrahamic, Mosaic, Deuteronomic, Davidic, and the New Covenant. Many biblical scholars believe God making the first covenant in Genesis 2:17. However the first mention of the word â€Å"covenant† in†¦show more content†¦It was a covenant that was founded in Moab. (Deuteronomy 29:1) The Deuteronomic Covenant reaffirms the promise of land for God’s people provided they obey him. (Deuteronomy 30:1-5) Like the Abrahamic Covenant the Deuteronomic Covenant promises numer ous descendants to Abraham and all of his offspring, this pledge is reaffirmed at Moab. (Deuteronomy 30:5) The promise for Abraham and his descendants to be blessed is also repeated at Moab. (Deuteronomy 30:6) To conclude the Deuteronomic was the covenant between God and Abraham extended. The promise of God is always certain; however for the people of Israel God’s blessing could only be experienced by obeying God’s law. The word â€Å"covenant† does not appear in 2 Samuel. However it is very clear in 2 Samuel that God does in fact make a covenant with David. The great covenant that God made with David included the following provisions: (1) David would have a son who would succeed him and establish his kingdom (2) that son (Solomon) would build the Temple (3) the throne of Solomon’s kingdom would be established forever (4) though David’s sins justified chastening, God’s love would be forever (5) David’s house, kingdom and throne wou ld be established forever. The covenant did not guarantee uninterrupted rule by David’s family, but it did promise that the right to rule would always remain with David’s dynasty.
